Advantages of Lithium

Longer lifespan

Lithium-ion batteries have a lifespan of 3,000 cycles or more, compared to just 500-1,000 cycles for lead-acid batteries. This means lithium-ion batteries typically last several times longer than lead-acid batteries. Additionally, with lithium-ion batteries, cycles are measured by the percentage of charge rather than counting one full cycle each time the battery is connected to the charger. For example, a 10% charge counts as only 1/10 of a cycle with a lithium-ion battery, while the same 10% charge in a lead-acid battery would be considered a full cycle.

Opportunity charging

Lead-acid batteries require a full charge cycle of 8-12 hours to maintain their chemical balance and are not suitable for opportunity charging, as it can damage the battery and shorten its lifespan. In contrast, lithium-ion batteries are well-suited for opportunity charging and can be plugged in for just 10 minutes during a lunch break without any harm to the battery's life cycle. This flexibility allows for more efficient shift work and reduces the overall amp-hours (Ah) that the truck needs to carry.

Lighter weight

Lithium-ion batteries provide high power density, making them significantly smaller and lighter about one-third the weight of lead-acid batteries. This allows manufacturers like EP to design trucks with enhanced ergonomics, increased legroom, and improved performance, thanks to the reduced size and weight of the batteries.

Higher efficiency

Most lithium-ion batteries are over 95% efficient, meaning that more than 95% of the energy stored is usable. In contrast, lead-acid batteries typically have efficiencies closer to 80-85%.

Fast charging

Higher efficiency batteries charge faster and offer a greater effective capacity. Lithium-ion batteries typically take 2-3 hours to charge, whereas lead-acid batteries require about 8 hours. This increased efficiency and capacity in lithium batteries significantly reduce downtime during warehouse operations.

Zero maintenance

Lead-acid batteries require special maintenance to extend their service life, such as regularly checking and topping up the battery water, whereas lithium batteries do not need active maintenance. This significantly reduces the costs associated with battery upkeep, maintenance, and infrastructure.

Less expensive

It is crucial to compare energy prices to ensure you're getting the best value for both lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries.

While lead-acid batteries may appear cheaper to purchase initially, lithium-ion solutions can be more cost-effective for warehouse operations in the long run:
  • Lower expenses and energy spent on charging batteries
  • No time and labour required for battery swapping
  • Reduced time and labour for maintenance and watering lead-acid batteries
  • Less energy waste (lead-acid batteries lose up to 50% of energy through heat, while lithium-ion batteries waste only up to 15%)
  • Smaller battery size with similar or better autonomy due to opportunity charging, potentially leading to comparable or reduced overall costs

More environmentally friendly

From an environmental perspective, lithium batteries are non-toxic and harmless. Lithium batteries emit no gases, making them a cleaner and safer technology compared to lead-acid batteries.
